Just a question really,

I do a fair bit of hedge laying, hedge restoration and as a result i end up with a fair bit of hawthorn timber (its a really great firewood), it makes up about 80% of my log pile, i cut most my timber to 4ft-6ft lengths so it fits on the atv trailer easily, after a few days of sawing it with the chainsaw and splitting the stuff with an axe im wondering if anyone else out there processes hawthorn and if so how you do it, i dont know how a processor would handle it as its not always perfectly straight and can be pretty knotty, would a circular saw and splitter be the best set up?

Cheers

Hawthorn is up there with ash, beech, oak. Always seems to split ok, even when knotty, although i cant speak for using a processer, i use a hydraulic splitter , then a saw bench.

Charlieh i put hawthorn and blackthorn through a japper processor works well but as you said i also cut my cord to 4 feet as most comes home on the quad they dont need to be straight as the processor has an arm with a spike which holds the wood still:001_smile:

Cheers David,

just trying to sort enough firewood to keep the house warm enough for the little one over winter so hence the interest in processing timber easier, that and a bit of shoulder pain when using the axe for long periods now

I am the same as you clearing hedges and ponds also woods and get lots of thorn trim it up and bingo a nice piece of cord.

Someone was telling me last week that furniture makers like hawthorn if you get any big stuff a good colour:thumbup:
