Another query post im afraid,

I guy has asked me to reduce his two Betula pendulas.

There both have good vigor and our 27-30 foot high.

I know that Betula species dont react very good to wounding unless the wounds are under 40mm and the tree is in good nick. The main trunk is thicker. What i want to ask is , is it worth saying dont bother as the tree will go down hill from then on if its wounded and a few more years later it will probably need felling anyhow due to xylem dysfunction and further rot or leave it and let it do its thing for another twenty years or so? Thing is , if you prune them they become brittle.

I think the owner is just worried about them geting to tall.

Whats your experince on Betula species?

Oh no- They don't like you up em! I really leave them alone if poss',maybe just nip the top a little an a crown lift if it is appropriate to keep him happy, so sad when they fail if they are a good example.
