I think it may be Fomes Fomentarius (Hoof Fungus) found on Birch Beech and other hardwoods. Visible all year round can be confused with a Ganoderma on some specimens.

A colleague thinks it may be Fomitopsis pinicola.

 

 

Do you know if the flesh is cream coloured or not.

Will go back and have another look. Thought it was Fomes forming, but havent really seen it looking like that before. Will have a look and see what it looks like now. (Will be a bit of a drive... but its all in the sake of learning!!) Thanks guys!:thumbup:

Fomitopsis pinicola is aka Fomes pinicola. Its not hard to see why....

err...yeah! prefers conifer to deciduous. Apparently.
