At first I thought it might be an Innonotus....then I see the way the bracket persists, and the added cracking. Also shows some new fb development on the lower bracket....Dont suppose yoiu know the history of the FB do you? I take it this is in Sweden?

Anyway, I wouldnt be too quick to rush to an ID..perhaps if my effort is met with concurrance amongst my colleagues, you might feel a bit more confident? Anyhoo. reckon it might be a Phellinus myself.....despite its rather symmetric presentation!

Thanks Bundle,

Yes its Sweden and no I dont know any history.

It's on a rowan and I was sent this only (and rather poorly) photo...

My first thought was Phellinus, but the person that sent me the pic is familiar with Phellinus as she has id several before. Hence my hesitation... Rigidiporous is one hint I got from Monkey-D but he was, as you, not convinced.

All ask if there is any more pics.

I 'm guessing the tree is close to a road and probably part of an Avenue of trees.

well spores are white, always a good head start having spore colour, at first i too thought it looked phelini, but seeing the way the new layer is coming through I would go with davids very good call on that one, looks rigi.

Still a newbie when it comes to this stuff...spore colour? How do you tell? or am I missing something obvious? You are saying white?!?

So shall I settle for Rigi?:confused1:

Or do I need more pics and info?

Thanks guys!

Grab some paper hold it near the spore bearing surface and give the bracket a tap. see stuff its brown/black dont see much .... you get the idea. its still only an id technique and should be combined with other features to lead to a strong identification.

Good luck:thumbup1:
