Possibly a stupid question but how do you tell if you have a sheathed power line or a large telephone line?

Bundled data lines are in pairs, power lines are in threes.

 

Power line poles should have warning signs on, telephone poles have footholds on.

 

Power lines have insulators, phone lines don't.

so all power lines come in three's? any single or paired (twisted together) black wire is not power?

The "insulated" abc type line is three strands.

 

Don't rely on one thing, add up all the evidence.

not sure if it has already been said but if you are not experienced in identifying the voltage of a powerline , and not sure of what you can and cant do within proximity to them then i would be staying well clear of them , if it goes wrong even with LV you will get badly burnt and possibly end your carrer as a tree surgeon early . and possibly end up in a whole load of grief with the local utility firm

The insulators thing isn't always correct. Possibly in the UK but here they have a habit of putting telecom on old 230v insulators. They also string 11KV on 33KV insulators. As combined tree said; if you are not experienced then just leave well alone. All the direction in the world on a forum or from books doesn't substitute for field experience and getting it wrong can cost big time.

well they look like large phone cables to me, i know bcause i've weighed in similar.I went on EDF's website to try and find a number to get better info but theres just laods of crap on there about howi can buy energy from them, so does anyone have a number for someon at edf i can call and get a confirmation on my lines?

No, you just have to ring the call centre. They are reasonably efficient though.

 

Whereabouts are you? In East Anglia shutdowns etc are now handled by UK Power Networks rather than EDF.
