Earthquake

Nothing to do with trees but I woke up this morning to hear that a massive earthquake had hit Christchurch in the South Island. 7.1 on the Richter scale and in the last five hours there's been about 14 aftershocks of magnitude 4 or greater. Shaky Isles indeed. A state of emergency has been issued for the city and surrounding districts.

Was 7.1,city center is closed off as lots of building fronts have fallen down,

I don't think the pictures on TV do it justice. I'd imagine it looks worse in the flesh so to speak. They reckon the state of emergency will last for at least a week while they check sewage lines, electricity etc. Glad to hear there were no fatalities though. Musta been hell scarey. Had a friend up in Te Aroha that got woken by it so must have been one hell of a shake.

Yeah think so,lots of roads are cracked and all over th eplace which will take time to fix.

 

And yes the house took a hell of a shake.Which was weird.Only 2 seriously injured people apparently.

Amazing no one was killed.

 

Lucky the main quake was so early in the morning I guess.

 

 

Didn't know you guys got 14000 quakes a year.

Must be a little uneasy knowing your above a couple of rubbing plates.

Had a spate of them in the central North Island last year. Nothing major, the biggest were about 4.3 - 4.4 on the scale but we had over 200 in two weeks. The one in Christchurch was a doozy though. Got to be thankful no one was killed but same day same island and 9 people die in a plane crash. Bummer.

I was living in Costa Rica when there was a 7.2 early one morning lasting about 50 seconds. The house was on stilts and rocking for all its worth, howler monkeys and parrots were going crazy in all the trees around the house, girlfriend screaming. It was one hell of a way to wake up.

So glad to hear nobody was killed with very few serious injuries sustained.

Seems so strange for Christchurch to get it and not Wellington cause that was always the fear that Wellington was up for the big one!

Hope you guys affected can still get stuck in and carry on!

City is like a war zone,A freind of mine felt it in wellington,Will be interesting driving around to do work because lots of roads have all been ripped up.Biggest quake since the 1930's
