i think you have probably 2 yrs comfortably looking at the crown but sometimes that can be deceiving cause you dont need to much root to keep things green but essentially you got a tree thats on a yellow card, you should look for other faults ie deadwood, unusually small leaves and so on.that said and done the trees eventually coming down one way or another you got to look at risk assessment and possibillity of death or damage

You cant really give acurate advice through photos.....

The tree seems to have put on plenty of reactive growth around the base and the crown looks reasonable.

It has probably been infected for several years, ganoderma doesnt scare me you see it commonly on oaks, they deal with it well with out having a closer inspection i would say 10+ years ( as i say it needs an inspection to clarify)

If you pm me with your area i know consultants that are scattered throughout the country and i can give you contact details..

Just a quick question is there any hollowing to the stem?

Agree Chris - as Ganoderma is a heart rot specialist it will usually munch away at the centre of the tree and ultimately leave a hollow stem. Plenty of hollow trees are still standing perfectly well.

I guess you could say that the tree in the photo could potentially go on for another 20 odd years - but once you know about a defect on a tree in a public place it is too risky to leave often.

Well this does seem odd, as a local TP officer has visited the tree identified the Ganoderma and believes the tree to be ok. The tree had no preservation order on his arrival but he has issued me with a PTPO now. I could understand this if the tree showed no signs of decay, but as the pictures show it clearly does have something. I'm a tad concerned here that if something were to happen that I am liable and the council have done nothing to help. Not to mention being rather annoyed with how this has been handled.

Send an application to fight the TPO on grounds it is diseased - unless the council take full responsability if the tree fails, you want to demand aletter confirming this.

The tree officer has already taken responsability by saying the tree is ok to put a tpo on it:wave:

Chris, surely you'll never get a council to send a letter accepting responsibility. I presume that’s kind of the point but have you had much success with this approach?

I tried this tack with a local council with some trees leaning over some buildings but they haven't budged. The tree owners insurers are also writing to the council.

The trees are OK, a little exposed since we removed two big neighbouring trees and one fell over. The neighbours are just scared cause if they go it will cause a lot of damage. The case has just been through the laborious appeal process and we're waiting on the report but the council representative just did the old any tree can fail line. It would be difficult to see the the council making a U turn and letting us take them down if the appeal is up held.

Yes i have had some success - If they put a tpo on a tree then they are saying it holds some value... If it holds some value it must have a reasonable safe life left. By saying this they are saying it is safe. If others disagree then they HAVE to take responsability...

If you take a car to the garage because you have break problems, they say its ok, you drive off and they fail you crash who is to blame.....:icon14:

Hope that makes sense!!!

Bob - Give the tree a chance saying two years is going to scare the owner. I don't think you can condem such a tree without a good poke around.

As Chris says there is plenty of reactive growth around the base and the crown looks reasonable. Also there are no signs of bulges or fibre buckling. IMO A significant oak like that should be given every chance.

Get someone who knows what theyre doing to have a good look. You would hope that the tree officer who has stuck the TPO on it knows a bit about trees and has had a good poke and tap with his/her mallet.. They have seen the tree and didn't think it a danger. That must be a first me backing a TO....
