Aurantiporus fissilis - the Greasy bracket

Although the two trees are about 500 meters apart, the brackets appeared similar.

 

Based on this and intrigued by a lack of positive Id, we took a closer look & after sending off samples to the Jodrell lab at Kew, we had it confirmed as Aurantiporus fissilis.

Apparantly this causes a White rot.

Never come across this thread before, reminded me of this one http://arbtalk.co.uk/forum/showthread.php?t=47770

I still go past it often, and am surprised it wasn't touched when the council surveyed, reduced or deadwooded half the trees down the avenue its on. I'm keeping an eye out to see if it fruits again. Was your fisillis very soft and spongy David? I'm wondering now if that IS what I found...
