someone asked ages ago about installingthe rope guide from the ground so heres the pics showing a way me and a mate worked out. its not ideal and im sure theres better ways but this does work. its major problem is it leaves the throwline attached after installation. doesnt work on the newer webbing ones either..

Hmmm, you could cut the ring off and thread the throwline through the stitched loop in the webbing.

Either way, if the cam slips on the rope or webbing, there is nothing to prevent it coming right off and dropping you to your doom.

That someone was me.

Thanks for posting Drew.

I'll give it a bash at work next week.

no worries mate. its not the only way to do it but its the only way that i can do, its good to hear the opinions of others as you see dodgy stuff that you may not of seen yourself. personally i never really bother with it - i prefer to footlck up and than set up my TIP once im there.

+ it helps to taper the (ropeguide)rope when installing it as above though

does the ART system require a back up?

Just as Peter says above, if there is no stopper knot or Stop ring in the end of the cambium saver webbing or rope and it does slip on the cam, it can just feed straight through and the whole lot fails.

I've seen them creep a little when loaded and unloaded but never seen them slip right to the ring.

It would bother me though, it would be in the back of my mind.

What would be wrong with replacing the short cambium saver rope with a, say 25m one. You would just install it as you would a climbing line and you could tie it off at the bottom of the tree, when finished you would need a means of pulling on the cam to retrieve.

Why not just set a line srt style with a pulley on the end and your climbing line preinstalled on the pulley. Tie the end of the srt line off to a belay device and you can retrieve the whole lot, even with the climber still attached!
