best 2 stroke oil for your saw??

just to add to the oil testing we did.

engines were stripped and all the synthetics did a good job, mineral however was never as good.

one engine lasted just 20 minutes before it destroyed itself on a mineral oil, i cant remember which one it was though. the engines we tested were the rotax 125 kart engines with a maximum life of 50 hours but normal rebuilds were 15 hours.

however, these engines were designed for fully synthetic oils running at 50:1 but the running in time of 20 minutes race pace we used a mix of 30:1.

they used 30:1 in the hot countries all the time.

i was told if a 2 stroke was designed for mineral oil then thats what it should use at its recommended mix, something to do with bearing tolerances etc.

we also tested a range of spark plugs but thats another story

champion packed in half a lap into the test, thought it was a dud so tried another, that lasted nearly a lap.

didnt try bosch.

Denso iridium were very good.

NGK was the best standard plug but get this.

NGK iridium knocked a second off the lap times after we jetted down from a 165 main jet to a 152. popped the standard one back in and it ran very weak.

only trouble with the Denso and NGK iridium was with a slow running engine on rolling starts, they would foul up then pack in completely.

so if you fancy trying an iridium in a chainsaw then keep it at high revs

we also did a lot of fuel testing and the best batch was ordinary unleaded from a well used outlet.

if stored in plastic containers it was binned after just 2 weeks as it lost its performance. metal containers were ok for much longer.

bp ultimate came out last in the test, shell optimax was the same as ordinary unleaded. aviation fuel gave no improved performance.

shell optimax gave improved performance in the TKM engines that run with vegetable oils (castrol R etc)
