Thought i would start doing a bit of a 'diary' from my main place of work......Richmond Park.

 

With around 1500 Veteran trees,(including Oaks, Beech, Lime, Hawthorn, Hornbeam, Sycamore) around 30, 00 Oak trees, Countless red list secies, Red deer, Fallow deer and much more besides it is a privilege to go to work.

 

Havent been doing much tree work lately although plenty of OPM nest removal! Back there today though and for the next couple of weeks until September when the real work will be kicking in again. Will have a full list of Vets to work on. (retrenchment pruning, small reductions, safety work, willow pollarding etc etc)

 

Todays job was felling a large Horse chestnut due to bleeding Canker and then clearing this Oak from the cycle path.

An interesting tree this one. As can be seen it has been growing between the buttress roots of a hornbeam. In search of light, straining out towards the light it finally became 'unplugged' and uprooted itself. Will go and inspect the

root plate when I have a little more time to walk around the fence.

The close up of the branch formation is from the same oak.

 

Other photos are within a sm,all wood which is pretty much left to its own devices. Lots of rootplate failures (which again i plan to look at in more detail another time). First time I've been in this particular wood but me like it!

 

Anyway hope others enjoy looking at what I serve up.

If you get time on your trawl through the site, I'd be intested in seeing how your fractures on the oaks from last year are fairing, in terms of advantitious regrowth & re-iteraration of the sprouts etc.....

Will be doing that for sure david....particularly the big Red oak which I carried out a full crown reduction on.

Nice one Sean is that re-pollarding or new pollards? I had a bit of wind here thursday night and i have six Oak boughs down one white poplar bough down and a couple of big willows down:biggrin:

Its interesting to think that the deadwood fauna and grass is what makes this site a designated SSSI. Arguably, not about the trees, well, only indirectly.

Designated SAC ....reason-Deadwood fauna!

There is increasingly a case for further protection? Or do we feel that coming at it sideways will suffice? The end result is the same.

not much doing today......done a few lifts over the perimeter road with mewp and felled a dead elm........love the markings of bark beetles.

 

Not sure what the funghi is.....???

 

Also a spiders lair on a vet oak.
