Todays job.....before and after. Big willow pollard. Felled half the poles onto the bank and the other half into the brook then pulled out with the landy. Nice job....

So back in the park after a wee sabbatical.

Big white Pop fell. This tree is just inside the perimeter wall with some very very big houses on the other side. Thjere has been some contentious issues surrounding this particular tree which i will not go into......anyway the tree had to go!

Have a couple of weeks reducing heights of existing monoliths as well as creating new ones. Lots of laborious (yet at times interesting) bat checks with the endoscope and mewp. Am going to try and post images from within these big old oaks because the endoscope picks up some weird and wonderful beasties.

Big Oak failure this afternoon. Co dominant stem on a vet literally 'unplugged'.

A very weighty limb just popped out. Very wet brown rot. Old pruning wound just below. Wet brown rot. No evidence of fruiting bodies.

Quite unusual failure. Not seen that in oak a great deal myself. Literally "popped" out its socket!

Edit: Being conservation minded Sean, it worth watching the fallen for FB's? There's gotta be an agent at work in there I racoon.:001_smile:

This isnt uncommon, and I suspect fistulina is the culprit here, if it had been laeti it would have slightly more red in its tonal range and there would be evidence of mycelial matts, white flecks, within the rays.

Visit any ancient oak woodland and these failures will be around everycorner.

Staverton, Windsor, Bradgate, Ashridge etc etc

Few photos from the park today....just randoms. This old beech is a fave of mine. Loads of Merip, Resinacium, Adspersum, Fomes...

The stags are warming up for the ruts. Been hilarious watching the young uns practicing on each other as well as on the the piles of brash.
