changing piston rings,,,,,,

i have a an old 044 and the compression is low but the rest is in good nick...so is it an easy job to swap rings and is it worth a go since they are not that expensive??? i have a 357 as well which i prefer really so id ideally like another husky but i have no money right now for the change so il stick with what i have!

Tis a simple job, Take the cover off the barrel then take the carb bellows off the barrel, carefully, (it’s easy to slip and puncture it). Now take the spark plug out and undo the 4 torx bolts holding the barrel down. Pull the barrel upwards and it will leave the piston behind.

 

Inspect the bore and piston for scoring, if all is well purchase rings (or a new piston and rings)and fit them (it), be gentle with them they break real easy.

 

Re fit in reverse order

 

Cheap as chips at 20 quid for a piston or 13 for a set of rings (eBay)

ok thanks...its worth a shot then, had saw apart before so il have a crack at it!

I keep the saw up right in a vice to hold it firm, make sure the rings are located correctly against the pins in the groove

s, I use fingers and a tuning screwdriver to gently ease the rings in, take your time. Pour a little 2 stroke oil in the barrel to help the rings bed in smoothly.

To get the rings compressed so the piston slips in easily, i use a band of mild steel.A drinks can would do,wrap it around the piston and bend out a couple of tabs to get some needle nose pliers on.Squeeze the tabs together to compress the rings and slip the cylinder down over the piston allowing the band to move down.

Rings are brittle so be carefull when you fit them.
