Well to be fair David, if it was Australe, then the deep intake would be fairly justified, as you well know.

 

I contacted our local TO Bob clark about a year ago after seeing a Aesculus with a small gano and obvious butress compensation, i said no great panic just yet. To be fair it was left for a year, this year it got picused (i saw the marks left by the sensors on all butresses) and a week later it was felled.

 

it had barely an inch of sound wood remaining and i can say catagoricaly, from personal experience, on chestnut at the least Australe is a FAST and nasty rotter.

 

Not like me to be so quick to judge, but i will never take a gano on chestnut for granted ever.
