I personally don't rate the record chisels(lathes good tho), If you buy good you only need to do it once. Robert sorby, ashley iles and henry tailor are the ones i would go for.

As your lathe is not to big you will get away with using a 3/8 fingernail spindle gauge which what you should be using on the candle holders and mushrooms.

When you get on to bowls a 3/8 fingernail bowl gauge. These two are the main tools you will use, the only other tool i would get is a decent parting tool.

I have similar thoughts, im hoping to be upgrading my lathe at some point this year, the fact it has no morse tapers and no tailstock chuck is infuriating.

Im looking at an axminster lathe/

i do have a mini set of ashley iles chisels and i like em, id love a larger set of them but at the moment money is a real problem!

ive just had a look at the mini jet, it looks pretty smart, when the clarke lathe broke last month i tried to get my money back to put towards an axminster "somthing" but clarke kicked up a stink and repaired it for me! the tool rest was an incredibly poor casting lots of bubbles, lumps of slag etc. :sneaky2: and the lathe bed flexes when any load is put on it. It was good for me to learn on, and to make sure i had the knack and ideas for it (Which i tihnk ive prooved i ahve!) just want somthing a bit fancier now!
