if you do buy surplus kit, log it in your equipment kit log when purchased and then date when it gets put into use, that way you can justify its low usage and satisfy the loler inspector that the kit is x amount of years old but only been used for said period,

a article i read a while back on rope longevity showed that a rope that had not been used nor been left in sunlight i.e stored correctly, lost up to 40 % of its strength over 12 month period, without any use what so ever, sobering thought really

6 months climbing,12 months lowering:001_smile:

Log date of purchase as 5 year working life unless specified as less...

All kit has a 10 year life from date manufacture,

if its been in a store or on a shelf for over 5 years it gets a shorter working life....

LOLER as above and don't forget PUWER so log all other issued/purchased kit and monitor including PPE...

This always an issue when you invest in specialist kit that rarely gets used, you end up killing off kit that looks like new but thats the rules.....
