Found this on the underside of a branch the other week...and thought it was reaction growth to a fracture but once split the fibres didn't really look as though they had undergone any excessive stress however the lower half is definately looking darker and the cambium layer does look disrupted?? Any ideas?? the branch was otherwise normal

If you consider the loading / force / lever dynamic of the scenario, it is not likely that a broadleaf tree will try and support weakness in this way ....
