Tree Planting in Wet Areas

Hey Everyone!

At home, the river runs right around one of our fields and i want to plant some trees in an area of it, theres already a lot of alder and willow trees around there so i want to put some other stuff around it, what do you recomend planting in a wet area or near-ish to a river? And at what time of year would be best to plant, as this field floods on and off throughout the winter.

Thanks Guys

Swamp cypress (Taxodium distichum), and Pterocarya would be a couple of different alternatives.

Pterocarya is quick growing and looks a bit like ash.

ahh right thanks peter, i have a look into them

november till march is planting season best before christmas . dont plant when frost on ground and snow not good for roots,:001_smile:

yeah thats what i thought, but because of the floods? we occasionly get them all through that time, would they wash the tree away, it can be up to 3ft deep at the worst times

they should be ok mate we have had some trees planted in flooded areas and havent had many problems dont if hole filles up when digging down make sue the water right down when you do it planting depth to root collar,if pit planting i dig square holes as encourages the roots to grow out better than a round hole and add a bit of mycorrhizae,i stake trees mainly one third of the trees height and some times lower or higher depends on how whippy they are:001_smile:
