I know its 'a question' thats been around for a long time now - but does anyone know why VAT is added to Chainsaw Trousers ? - I believed that PPE should be all VAT free ?

People are hardly going to wear them to the local palais on a saturday night are they ? - maybe they do its a long time since I went to a proper night club !

As far as i know the VAT thing came about for the building industry. So it covered boots & helmets, builders don't need protective trousers thats why there not included.

If anyone knows anything different please let me know as its a question I'm asked a lot.

Funny you should say that, but I worked with a cutter years ago who often went to the pub on the way home fully decked out in chainsaw PPE including loggers belt with log tape and timber tongs . He only took his hat off.

If he wore his boots in the pub perhaps he should have paid the vat on them too!

There is no particular reason why PPE should be VAT free. As far as I know there is no logic in this - we've talked to various members of HMRC over the years and it just seems to be an anomaly that safety helmets and boots (NOT shoes!) are zero rated if purchased by the user for their own personal use - it's just the law - it doesn't have to make sense!
