look to the right of the base of this bracket, this photo is blurred and hard to say but i reckon i might be more concerned about the ustulina looking four lumps of charcoal!

the bracket is iether Ganoderma Species of a phelinus of some sort, but difficult to say iether way the tree needs a proper look at, if that is usulina it isnt good news as to the bracket determination of species is important, applanatum is not as critical as Australe/adspersum as the later has several rot modes and strategies for penetrating barrier zones.

are you local?

It is not likely to be connected to the fungus on the lowest part of the stem, I wouldnt rule it out, but fungi tend to have preferences to Root/trunk base ore flare such as Inonotus dryadeus. others like the stem and heavy limbs like Chicken of the woods and others like the branches, these mostly tend to be in the saprophytic division. if this bracket was white at the start it may well be adspersum as the white is the lip unfurling, like i said though this wants a proper look, especialy at the little black lumps that look like ustulina.

Where would you like me to send the fruit body? Do you only handle the fungus side of a tree or do u still do tree work? as i have another question that i need answering about topping some ash tree's

Thanks Tony

Hama, I know it's impossible to tell from photos, but I think your first ID on the bracket might be the right one. Shape isn't always reliable, but I think that lip around the edge of the bracket is more Ganoderma than Phelinus and the location of the fruit body at the base of the tree also fits the bill?

What will you do with the FB to make a positive ID?
