no pics sorry, help if u can....fungus is high up on ash tree when i saw it n the summer it looked like Ganoderma applanatum..a few beech nearby are in fected.....was on site today, said fungus has turned jet black over winter? prognosis?

Sounds like Inonotus hispidus, Shaggy Polypore Imo :scared:

I would agree off your description ( Inonotus hispidus) formely Polyporus hispidus - A good reference for you to look at would be Diagnosis of ill-health in trees pages 226-227-228-229 :icon14:

 

It is commonly found on trees that have suffered some sort of root damage at a stage in their lives...

 

The fungus is also associated with prunning wounds and storm damage etc, mostly located high up the stem....
