An object will fall 4.9m in the first second - assuming air resistance is negligible and initial velocity is zero.

Is this the answer to the quiz?

First prize to you. With that sorted its easy to work out everything else.

In the second second, the object has an average velocity of 15 m/sec (beginning 10m/sec, final 20 m/sec) so the distance covered is 15m. From the beginning the distance covered is 20 m. For the third second, the average velocity is 25 m/sec (beginning at 20 m/sec and final at 30 m/sec) for a distance covered of 25 m. Or from the start, 5 m + 15 m + 25m = 45 m approx.

so in hind sight detritus 21 deserves all prizes. and we can now enter the second stage of the game

This is wrong - sorry! :blushing:

The answer should be 7448 N or 7.448 kN

the answer to your original formula was 744.8N so that would make it 0.7448 kn. all your gear would explode with forces of 7kn, wouldn't it?

Good job. thats that bit sorted then. Yeh detritus21 got it right first but Hamadryad didn't know that as he had since thanked others for wrong answers. Thats why my post in response to hama was dont complicate it yet, you dont know the right answer.

Detritus, munkymadman and wee dee can all consider themselves worthy of a goldfish. :thumbup1:

Munkymadman, if your kit would explode at 7Kn, get new kit, even micropulleys are rated at 35Kn.:001_tt2:

correct me if i'm wrong(and i have a habit of being so), there's a thousand newtons in kilo newton. is a KN a metric tonne. i thought i remember those little slings being rated at 2000N. i need to look again. thats why i thought he was out by a decimal point. some clarification would be appreciated.
