Do you mind me asking which exams you sat? For a few of the professional qualifications out there I'd expect the candidate to have knowledge above and beyond the "suggested reading material" list. In this instance I think (without making reference) that step cuts are described in the draft BS3998 which was released for consultation a year or so back... I'd say that for the Tech Cert or Prof Dip you should know and be able to cite the contents of even the draft.

Sorry if thats not the answer your looking for... I guess it all depends on

A) the qualification

B) how prescriptive the reading list is

This was the L2 cert in arb, one of my points was if you are doing these cuts you would have the relevant CS unit. This question was on paper 2. IMO there is enough they could ask you on in the core of the subject.

Studied at college, way i revised was to work my way through the knowledge requirements. Done this with the soil paper last year and got 78% (maybe its just sour grapes on my part). I see your point about practical knowledge, but last year we had a bloke on our course who was a builder looking to get into tree work and had never even picked p a saw. I know i will get no where with ABC they just wont give me a straight answer about where I could have got the information to answer the question. We have too tree surgeons on our course and they only achieved a pass mark.

Thanks about the CS32
