I'm looking at getting my first pickup. Currently just have an arb tipper truck but would like the pickup for smaller jobs, towing, and doing quotes & for personal use as well.

Can anyone advise what to look for in either a toyota hilux, ford ranger, or isuzu dmax? Open to other suggestions too just like the look of these ones.

Also don't know if better to go 4x2 or 4x4. Honestly vast majority of jobs are domestic work in town and I don't need 4x4, so cheaper cost/fuel efficiency/less to go wrong and better future maintenance costs etc is appealing. But 4 wheel drive could be handy <1% of jobs.

Would appreciate any advice, thanks

Have you checked out the new tax regs re Pick-ups, Benefit in Kind(BIK). HMRC have realised people use double cabs as cars! I don't think the new BIK applies to single cab or king cab.

If you have an accountant ask them for advice.

You might be better getting a small van now.

I've been very happy with my L200s but they aren't available new, as Mitsi pulled out of UK/Europe.

I saw a hybrid Pick-up advertised on tele the other day, can't remember the brand, but that'll be serious money, but may have different tax status.

If you aren't going to do at least 20 mile trips in it once a week then get an older one without a DPF . The road tax will be higher but it won't give you the problems you can get not putting miles on the clock of a euro 6.1 truck .
