We have a large beech tree in our back garden and have noticed some new dark patches on some branches. They look almost like patches of moss, but would be grateful for any thoughts. Depending on people’s thoughts, I will arrange for someone to visit and check it in person.

Thanks,

James

no, It is I who should apologise,  there have been a few posters lately who post a question, and ignore any replies, then post the same question a few days later, I mistakenly thought this post was a repeat of that.

so in my limited opinion, it's quite common for mosses and lichens to form a harmless symbiotic relationship with trees and other plants.  this looks at first glance to be one such example.

once again, my apologies.

No it’s @oldfeller who should apologise.

To me that looks like moss, which is perfectly normal, doesn’t harm the tree and is nothing to worry about.
