If it makes you feel any better, it's a similar story with the chainsaw trousers when buying motorbike crash helmets - they're required by law (none of the other protective kit is a legal requirement apart from the helmet), but there's VAT charged on them.

 

Must suck if you're a motorbike courier!?

how are chainsaw trousers not essential items like what hamaddryad said, They are very important. I know they are expensive but if they save your leg then they seem cheap, If you know what i mean.

I heard (on radio 4 I think it was) that if you would be indecent without the item of protective clothing you have to pay VAT.

 

I guess they would have to be wearing some trousers of some sort, so the fact that they are protective and expensive is just tough.
