After a visit from the chimney sweep I lit a fire and 10 mins later this dropped into the fireplace. Is it a baffle? How do I refit it?

Well, it's got you baffled!

Do you not have the stoves instructions, it should tell you how to fit it in there. If you don't have them they may be available online.

A stove id would also help.

I won't ask him to come back, he lives 80 miles away, I'm in rural France. I'm sure it's easy to fit as there are no screw holes etc, so it must just sit on something.

An image search shows this up, if its any help.

So, it looks like a baffle for an Invicta stove if you can search on that.

It looks quite complicated to me. My stove just has a folded piece of metal that sits on two bars at the top of the stove. My concern is you can put it in the wrong way round, hence suggesting trying to find instructions, even just for a similar stove.

Might need to get your head in the stove for a good look but angled to go up above a bracket would be my guess - however for information and you have it in place again, how did you do it?
