Del Morino flail mower

Hello,

I'm looking for advice as this is a subject I know very little about.

Image is of my current set up.

I've a Del Morino 106 Centurion flail for my Solis 26.

I'm intending to change the hammers for the Y shape flails as I'm not satisfied with the performance overall having been used to Y shape on previous machines.

I also find the hammers vulnerable to blunting quickly.

On the rotor, the space for the head of the hammers is 40mm.

I guess the two flails back to back take up less than 10mm so the spacers (Entretoise in French) each side ought to be 20mm leaving some play?

The bolt is a 12mm so should I order spacers with a 12.5mm hole?

 Advice gratefully received.

       Stuart.

Are Y flails actually a factory option?.

Most flails I've seen didn't have the shoulder in the slot, as that looks like it works like the back of a chair instead of folding back if it hit and obstruction.

But they should always be tight in the slot, so right size bushing, spacers etc. So they don't slop around and gives a better level cut or vibrate around at 1000+ rpm.

Do you think that the rotor is incompatible with the Y cutters?

Think that might be the case, are all the flail slots the same or is it just a repair ?.

As you can see where the current flails have gouged two slots where it touches.

They are all the same, not a repair.

Truly I am without wisdom on this subject.

Maybe I'll just buy another set of hammers.

I rarely use the flail as it is.

During COVID it saw more action with Brits and some French being unable to travel over and their gardens and growing wild as a result.

Flails don't leave a bad finish, but a little tickle with the grinder does help to make a better cut instead of blunt knives.

People could argue the plus/negative of both, but they all rely on having a decent cutting surface for a good finish and a counter knife to almost liquidise it as it recirculates.

I'm personally slowly moving back to rotary in agricultural and trying to graze it more.

Flails are great for a quick bam and it's gone but then the grass grows again.
