I folks , I was wondering if anyone here has first hand experience with the older m tronic ms201t ( black solenoid ) first : does any one have a part number for a replacement black solenoid? Next question is :

can I change this old version to new 3.0 version?
if so which parts would I need for change .. she still runs like a dream at the mo , just planning to completely overhaul her one weekend soon , any experience/ advice greatly appreciated.. cheers

I do know that the replacement for the black solenoid is the green solenoid.

I think the version 3 mtronic is for the 462, 661 etc, im not sure about the 201 but to upgrade yours to the latest version may require a coil, flywheel and possibly a carb swap. TBH, I dont think that you would notice much of a difference in power. If your saw is running well I would just do the usual fuel filter, air filter and spark plug renew. You could swap the solenoid as a precaution as I think they they are more prone to wear or just swap it if and when the saw starts to play up.

I'm pretty sure Stihl did an upgrade kit with every thing in the bag much cheaper than you could buy the parts individually . It included a coil and a flywheel and a carb I think . Worth asking if they still sell it .

Forgive my stupidity, whats the difference? What do you gain from this upgrade?

Could these be made to fit an old 020T? Mine was playing up a bit today, working in the rain it took ages to warm up and occasionally a pain to keep running. Likely it needs a bit of adjustment.

That was for the first version of the MS201..the non Mtronic one, the one that was utter shyte with a topping of shyte. The first time I tried to rev one it sat in my hand going Mmmmmmmm with the chain stationary and then burst in to life...that is why they introduced the kit of bits.

As Mark Skyland says, if the idle is sweet then just do the normal service -plus try fitting the mesh air filter rather than the flock one if fitted and check the muffler - you need to ensure the bottom isn't cracked, a common issue from heat expansion.

The first sign that the solenoid is faulty is that the saw will keep stalling on idle, best fit the filter and solenoid kit if that is the case. The new fuel filter is much finer and guess Stihl found the old type let through too much dirt and supplied a finer one.

Just opening up the existing muffler outlet hole with a Dremel will give the saw a bit more go if needed.

The only reason for the original post is that all I read is how bad the first series m tronic black solenoid is,, mine has been flawless now for 8 years,, I do look after my saws and get a long life out of them compared to company saws .. I just want to future proof the 201 by having most likely needed spares in stock in the workshop, after this long even tho she runs fine I’d prefer to strip and overhaul to limit the chance of it breaking down on a job .. I do all work on my own saws and thought as we moved into m tronic and autotune it was gonna make them impossible for us to work on and fix… it seems not 👍🏻

Stihl did an upgrade kit for the non mtronic 201, i dont think they did it for the mtronic version. If they do then it will be much cheaper than buying the individual parts.
