Steve, It has to be 5mm to be welded and because there'll be no angle iron to support it. It will still weigh less than 3/4 ply.

Matt, yes, that's similar to my drawing but the sides will taper in as well.

I used to use a tarp, but the bandit chippers discharge is so fierce it rips them to shred.

The mesh front lets a load of dust all over the cab and stops it being nice and shiney

I wouldn't mesh a front window as into a head wind of a decent strength running empty the front end will feel light. QUOTE]

???? Light front end? Its a Land-Rover!! Plus a mesh window acts as an exhaust vent when chipping into the box, stopping the swirl effect and half the chip dust blowing straight back at you.

If you have ever driven a land rover with a roofrack and solid floor into a gale, you'd notice the steering goes light! I learnt form experiance. You'd get the same effect with an empty chip box, the window may act as an exhaust but will also give the chip a route straight out the back and all over the cab and road, giving even more clearing up.

And yep slipstreaming wagons gives great fuel economy:drunk:

Considering good 12 ply plywood is £45 a sheet that price isn't bad. I was going to get some gas and a reel of ali wire and have a go with my mig, it's easy once you get the settings right and got the weld area clean

I had ago with ali welding once, you do tend to have to weld like the clappers, you can't hang around as much as you can with steel.
