Leaning Magnolia - what to do

Hello, 

 

We recently moved into a new house with an established (little gem?) Magnolia in the back garden. 

 

Our main issue is it is leaning pretty dramatically. Is there anything that would be recommended? Should I support the leaning branch to avoid breakage, should I cut back a bit etc? Does it need professional input? Is it fine as is?

 

Any advice would be much appreciated. 

 

In case it helps at all

- The lean is in the direction of the prevailing wind, but I think it may have more to do with the a large overhanding ash tree in the neighbours garden. I've removed       the overhanging branches to allow more light hit the Magnolia.

- It has a dense crown but maybe too young for flowers, we certainly haven't seen any over the past six months. 

- It had some shoots coming through the soil, which I think means it was planted too deep, so I've removed some soil in an attempt to get closer to the root flare. 

- It had a piece of twine around the base of the trunk, which was cutting into it. I've removed this.

Id chop this bit off and leave the rest, also some  mulch is always good
