Bark on beech trees

Was messing about in some of the trees at my parents house and spotted that some of the bark was missing on 2 beech trees next to each other.

On both trees there's big patches (>1.5m) or smaller patches (around 20-30 inch) patches of bark missing.

Never come across this when out on the tools.

 

I've attached a couple of pictures of what it looks like, but it seems to be lots of patches around the whole tree.

Yep, another vote for squirrel damage, grey squirrel. It's been a very bad year for damage down here and I've heard other people around the country say the same.

Agreed. Worst year ever and they love beech.
