newly planted dawn redwood with discolored leaves

Recommended Posts

Hello, I have recently put my dawn redwood into the ground after a number of years of it growing in a large bucket. However after a few days I've noticed some leaf discoloration. Some of the leaves look darker then previously and not its normal bright green.

Do I need to be worried? What could be causing this and how should I address it?

Some back round information:
Its roughly five years old.
I did untangle and prune the bound roots the best I could. (Lesson learned about buckets!)
The ground is a bit wet and we've gotten a lot of rain recently.
I removed a lot of dirt from the root ball with a hose to untangle it.
Its getting a lot more sun then previously (full sun instead of 6 hours)

Well if leaves are looking darker than before I'd guess the thing's breathing a huge sigh of relief at being out of the nutrient-starved bucket and is about to burst into growth.

I'd be worried if leaves were turning brown and dropping but it sounds like the reverse is true.

I hope I'm right here as it would make a nice change from the usual vein of similar threads where the explanation to the poster's question is 'it's probably dying'!

You seem to have done everything right; just look at that luuurvely mulch 😊
