Moving 35 year old oak

Recommended Posts

Morning all,

We have an oak that is unfortunately in the way for building a new cattle shed. It will be about 10" DBH and about 22" tall. Its got a decent crown and is generally pretty healthy. I want to try and relocate it, the digger man has done a couple before and suggested a fairly severe prune before we dig round the roots and lift it out.

Any tips and tricks on timing etc welcome.

Many thanks

Tom

Pruning is a good idea, when moved it will lose a lot of small roots for water uptake, so reducing leaf cover will reduce water demand.

Winter (when dormant) is best time to do it. The next few months will be the worst time, but if you have to  make sure you water it regularly.

Good luck.

Jan.
