361 Rebuild - anyone near North Yorkshire that can be recommended?

Hi all,

I have an old 361 that’s been amazing but it’s at the point now where it’s hard to start and doesn’t like to run for too long. I’ve spent some money on it at local fixers getting the usual treatment but now its just too much of a problem to work with.

I’m wanting to get it fully rebuilt with some real beans put into it along with a full wrap handle.

I’m in the North Yorkshire area, can anyone recommend someone within travelling distance that can rebuild this little beauty and tune it up/ get the most out of it?

Many thanks !

If you are prepared to spend serious money on it such as you suggest, then go to the best there is...not someone who happens to be closest.

You are obviously willing to spend more than its worth, so money would appear to be no object, so someone who is an expert in their field will expect to have machines sent to them for porting, re building etc.

No, I am not touting for business....I fully admit i am not expert in improving on what comes out the factory. I can repair a machine to factory standards ready to be reused, but specialist stuff is best left to those who specialise in that.

I would hope you really love that saw though.it already has a pre existing problem that needs addressing, then you say you want a complete re build....so is that all new parts, re use old parts but replace seals gaskets etc? One persons idea of a rebuild is anothers refresh.

I often get people in asking me to 'overhaul' their machines. To my mind that is a restoration back to as new as you can get.....what most people mean when pressed is get it going and let me know if theres anything serious.

I have done a few of these machines now and gutting the muffler really helps get the best out of them. It isn't a particularly easy job but if you get rid of the very restrictive internal baffles and do the porting and ignition advance, these machines get a bit bonkers. The MS361 is a fine saw, I am servicing one at the moment but am only doing local work now and am busy with other retirement projects.

Funny you mention the saw cutting out, the one I have in had the flywheel come loose but now it is running, the idle is a bit up and down so am replacing the accelerator pump in the carb and am pretty sure that is the issue.

I really like the size and weight when out cutting. Got a lot of felling this year to come up ands the 572 is just a bit big and numb and anything smaller will mean carrying 2 saws.

Having the 361 running well would just be perfect. Not to mention the cost of new saws at the moment !

Ive just dropped it with a Lad today but it’s a 3month lead time so lets wait and see.

It’s having the works.

Proper rebuild with all the mods including porting and a full wrap and foam stack air filter.
Fingers crossed, but yes it is going to cost some money… but less than a new saw and should cut better i hope.
