Device for easy retrieval of Cambium Saver (Friction Saver)

One of my danish collegues, Benjamin Skovmose, has engineered a little device that eases the retrieval of Cambium Savers. He calls it "Gold Nugget".

 

I find it really useful, and choose to present it to you to get your comments as well as to get your opinions of the marketabiliy of such a device.

 

 

Below, I have created a series of images that show the Golden Nugget in use.

Retrieving traditionally

 

 

The traditional way of retrieving a Cambium Saver, is to make a simple overhand knot in the climbing rope, but frequently the knot gets stuck on the big ring (as shown on the picture), and you have to struggle quite a bit to retrieve it.

 

The "Gold Nugget"

 

The Gold Nugget is made from a solid nylon block, and is easily attached to the end of the climbing rope, and can be mounted on ropes with diameters ranging from 10 to 13 mm.

Retrieving a Cambium Saver using the Gold Nugget is very easy, and there is no tendency for the Gold Nugget to get stuck in the rings.

There is, i gave one away to a young lad that worked with us a while ago.

A light alloy one if i recall.

there is! i still have one atached to an old retired rope that i use as a work line. but it cant be removed.

is the golden nugget removable or is it stuck on?

 

its not a bad bit of kit, theres just a couple of other devices that work exactly the same way, its just a preferance realy.

using a spliced eye those ball retrievers are my choice also, though I do like to remove the staple holding the cord together and replace with a more robust knot as I have lost one due to the staple failing!

 

The plastic "golden nugget" is a great thing in principal, far better than the old ally ones that would occasionaly give you a good clout on the nuggin!

 

Be warned though, I know a guy that borrowed anothers rope on a re assesment cert and asumed the loop sticking out the end of the alloy nugget was the terminal loop. It was not and it came umdone from its neatly tucked position and resulted in a rapid decent meeting every ugly branch on the way down.

Sure, a ball stopper, mallion, dog lead clip, chain link is all fine, if you have a spliced eye in your climbing rope.

 

Without a spliced eye, you have the choice between using an overhand knot or ... the gold nugget.

I made my ball stopper with long cord so i can tie it to the rope with itself using a prussik. and all in it cost me £1.50.
