The tree is on the roadside and the cavity is where a kerb stone has been pushed out of the way at some point in the trees growth. Another kerb stone still visible on the right. But yes might be worth a prod in there with a torch. I’ll get the council inspector out as it’s their tree.

One would think with that many brackets on poplar there would be a significant amount of decay, will be interesting to see.
I was a bit shocked, there is a strip of healthy wood at the top - otherwise all punky.IMG_20211016_122143.jpeg

Thanks for sharing, interesting to see what it was like inside ... not much holding that tree up, it should have been removed long before now it seems, just as well you were called in to take a look at it!

Yes, I'd quite like to grind the stump now to find out what the roots are actually like - I suspect mostly dead.
