Which beech?

Recommended Posts

I don't pretend to know a lot about this subject but could it be a cultivar , like a fern leaved beech , is there a graft line ?

No me either, although I give it my best! I think you must be along the right lines with a graft. Especially if it was in a gardens.

I’ve landed on it being a cross between a Fern leaved beech and a Fastigiate Beech. I’ve trawled books and the web and can’t find anything.

Double checking the difference, the way it is named in the book does indeed suggest it is a cultivar rather than a variant.
I didn’t notice a graft line, but if they are done well it shouldn’t really be that noticeable.

So I got back to the tree. I’m pretty sure it is a cockscomb beech after another look.
Any ideas if it would grow true from seed if I go collect some, or is it worth trying to propagate some cuttings?

Its not a fern leafed beech that's for sure having seen the leaves .

Save yourself a lot of grief and try grafting onto a well established beech seedling.
