a worthy thread to add this anecdotal observation to.

have been waiting for a while to come across two brackets sitting side by side like this..

 

 

upon taking slices, it is clear how hard it is to determine which is which..

 

 

I'm pretty sure that the bracket on the lhs, is Ganoderma applanatum

& the bracket on the rhs is Ganoderma australe/adspersum.

 

The only real way to clarify this is taking a look at the spore shape & size under a scope (which I haven't done as yet)

 

Ganoderma australe/adspersum has a miniscule but notably larger spore size.

 

An aqauintance who has vastly more mycological experience than I have, is not convinced without the spore evidence.

 

& i have to say that finding them both sitting on the same substrate acting saprophytically, is not atypical for both species.

 

But I'm happy enough to lean toward my conclusion with these two specimens.

That's an excellent shot of the two brackets on the same tree. Having them so close together like that makes it easy to see the very obvious differences between them...

 

... But I still wouldn't be able to say which is which!
