oak problem

I was doing the aerial inspection with Charlie, and many symptoms point towards Stereum sp. Does anyone have experience of live oaks with this decay?

 

 

Looks to me like it could be an old lightning wound which has caused some xylem dysfunction and has now been colonised with the associated saprophytic fungi.

\the stereum is hirsutum, nothing to worry about, commonest of all, especialy on oak dead wood, and its not going to break down the heart wood much, its left over from having eaten the sapwood.

 

Its a good thing, it will probably help prevent infection by more serious heart decay fungi.
