Birch roots push water up xylem vessels before leaf flush by positive root pressure. Once the leafs open water is drawn up by transpiration.

 

Very few temperate trees show positive root pressure.

I'm starting to agree with you David.......I've often admired it but this week since the start of this thread i've started to really look at it.........it is a maginficent tree.

If you rub brich leafs on your hands in water they lather up like soap and you can clean yourself.

the white pigment in the bark is 'betulin' best seen on the betula utilis where it rubs off onto your hand. been exploring the scottish birchwoods in the snow lastweek on holiday,

loads of pictures of birch polypore and friends, found an unusual growth up one, pics posted later.

Ist photo's look like hoof fungus (fomes fomentarius)?? last Polyporous betulinus?
