Fungus on the Mature Chestnut tree

We have a Mature Chestnut tree in the garden that recently had lots of fungus growing only at the tree butt. I think it is honey fungus but just need to be 100% sure. Tree location/area is fairly damp all year around which I believe the chances of encouraging fungus are higher. There is a fair amount of rot at the root plate but it has adapted like that for years. It had a crown reduction few years ago to minimise the wind sail.  A very large limb snapped few months ago in the high wind. Can anyone help please?

Nice tree by the way. Could well be Honey Fungus, but are there any rings on the stipe or stem of the mushroom?

 

My initial thought was scally cap of some sort, others with more experience than I would probably be able to give you a more definite answer. 

 

Try looking at the stem to see if it has a ring and also have a good look at the underside of the mushroom to see what its like

I dont think its honey fungus.  looks more like sulphur tuft.

Could be Coriolus versicolor. Causes white rot I think

These are past their best of course, which always ‘muddies the waters’, but agree with Treeation - they look like Sulphur Tuft (Hypholoma). 
A photo of the gills would clinch that id.

Honey fungus is quite variable and there are several subtly different species, but it’s generally a bit larger and usually seen in a ‘tufted habit‘ (growing in tight, dense clumps).

Sulphur Tuft is saprophytic. Suggest not in this instance. Could be extensive lignin degradation present. Suggest investigation.
