Conway,

I'm just starting out in the business and work for my friends company part time, going full time in the new year.

He assisted with the purchase of my PPE. I got a Petzl helmet ready for when i start climbing for him. Pair of Hiax boots and they are comfy and warm for what they are priced at. Pair of Husky Chainsaw Trousers and Gloves.

As other people have said try and use the colleges kit first and make your own mind up. I know when i did my climbing course i climbed in 3 different harnesses on different days and found 1 easier to use than the others.

Additionally i used the Colleges saw's which were Stihls 260's and they were well used but serviced daily due to the courses run. My Instructor brought in a Husky 246 and i used that for a few cuts and found it to be easier and lighter to use when doing the felling part of the course.

I have no preference. I've since purchased a 246 and 200t off ebay and serviced them myself and they both work fine.
