Fixing a forestry tape

I've been a complete idiot.  I stupidly started fiddling with my (Oregon) forestry tape the other day and took the spring out (read 'had it explode in my face').  I've managed to fold it back into the outer casing, but it doesn't seem to be in correctly and the casing is impossible to put back on.  Does anyone know if it's even possible to put a forestry tape spring back in with minimal tools, and what the correct procedure is?  I can't find any information on the web besides the usual swapping of the tape.  I'd rather get it fixed than have to fork out £40 for another tape.

Thanks in advance for any help!

Yes, all it needs is a small screwdriver.

I’m guessing you’ve got it back together but lost the spring tension. Here’s a video that might be helpful:

Edit: I’ve reread your post and realised you can’t get the cover back on. Better post a picture for us so we can see what’s going on.
