Cleaning Sponge air filter

Good afternoon,

The internet suggests a few ways to do this, so was going to check the best way on here. any hints and tips would be appreciated.

 

Internet suggested something like Turps would clean it and then to put on a light coating of mineral oil - would that be the way to go?

Light blow with airline to get larger particles off then warm soapy water, rinse then leave to dry before refitting. Can also bath them in petrol, will allow to be refitted almost instantly but fairy liquid and water mix is best. I know some manufacturers now say not to oil them, even though years ago the same manufacturers (Kohler etc) told you to.
