Pruning Cuts

Mostly the first pic unless there is a very clear collar present.. I had always assumed following the branch bark ridge down and forming an L and aiming to finish the cut on it was the correct method?

An article by Dan Neely in 1991 showed that for several species the forst cut will result in more rapid callus an healing over, the second will cause less dicoloration and decay in teh remaining stem woid but the healing will be markedly slower.

 

In both cases I'd try and get closer to the collar.

Thats a codominant, not a subdominant branch, so good luck finding a collar!

 

Depends on species; a maple would be slanted; an oak maybe not. 

 

Can't go wrong with smallest cut now, and maybe tidy up later.
