Stihl 038 AV Super

Chaps. I’m looking to buy an 038av super. Can anyone tell me about these machines. I don’t know too much about them but I believe they are good machines. Were they big farm saws? Or saws for professional use? Any help would be greatly appreciated

I got one in good condition great old saws but a bit heavy compared to new stuff but plenty power

Dunno really we had this one new and was used as a pro saw but didn,t get a lot of use,i still use it now and again

How does it stack up compared to new machines? Better built?

I have one and the build quality is excellent, all metal but it’s very weighty and over aggressive in the cut without the power to back the aggression if that makes sense. I use it now and again but it doesn’t come close to my 372.

They are a pro saw if having a vertically split alloy crankcase, variable oil adjuster and closed port cylinder denotes a pro saw. They are heavy, old school sluggers but are strong. They may get a bit of piston slap on heavily used ones, the AV won't be up to modern machines but are a solid unit!
