4x4's with double lights?

Can anyone shine any light on why some 4x4's have double rear lights?

My brother's baby Landcruiser Colorado has rear lights in the bumper that look like an afterthought. There's also proper moulded ones, but these are not connected, never were (the housing doesn't have bulb sockets, though there's wiring to them)

My dad's proper cruiser has only the normal moulded ones.

An old disco we used to have had the afterthought bumper ones.

My grand Cherokee, moulded.

Whyyyyyyyyy????

It's not height, the big cruiser has the lights at the same height as the wee one.
The transit van, higher still.

It's not width, the big cruiser is wider.

It's not UK specific.

Whyyyyyyyyy!?!?!?!?
