had the new echo 501 a week now and up until today was not impressed although i am an echo fan . the saw felt really sluggish so after 4 fills turned the high and low setting in a bit but still no real gains . i had already took the screen off the exhaust so then took the silly tube out of exhaust and opened the outer exhaust cover up a bit . went  back to standard settings and what a difference . instant pickup and lots more revs and power .this saw is strangled by the exhaust settup from new .if you own one and have not done this you are not getting this saw at its best . why would echo make a cracker and then strangle it so much . the difference after spending 5 mins on it is simply amazing

Can you post a pic up please mate?.. I like my 501sx, but I'm not impressed with the air filter...apparently you can change it?

I took the arrester screen off my echo 390 and it melted the chain brake. put it back on and it stopped melting it!

It didn't make much difference to that saw though.

Only other problem i get is the fuel cap keep swelling up and is really hard to move, on my second now and really need a third. my local dealer has never heard of it happening before.
