Using Climbing Gear From The States In The Uk

Several places i have worked at and this has always reared it's head, can we use equipment from the states over here even though it is not CE stamped etc, I know were I work it is not allowed if not stamped even though it has it's own countries approval.

The main reason for this is we have seen some saddles in the states for a business venture we are looking to set up between two of us but are concerned that the insurance would be void if the equipment is not to european standards e.g.CE stamp and how we would stand regarding the HSE.

would really be gratful for any guidance or advice:confused13:

You looking at New Tribe?

CE is related to sales. If a product is sold in the EU it should be CE marked. If you bought it outside of the EU then it doesnt need to be CE marked. As simple as.

So long as the equipment is fit for purpose and in good condition, and loler inspected then you can use it.

Unless your insurance has a specific clause, which is unlikely but worth checking.

Dont see why not. What is there to stop you?

Ask Douggie at Tavistock Chainsaws about non CE marked saws, I understand he had a container load of "cheap" saws ( husqvarna) from Romania and couldnt sell them cos they had no CE markings or rating at the time.

As far as LOLER is concerned if its got no CE or EN marks then I will not pass it fit for use unless there is supporting test/inspection paperwork from the manufacturer or importer. The CE mark can be given to individual items or batches sent for independent inspection and approval. ( a customer of mine imports pond stuff from the US and has been down this route)

i think a dealer selling non-ce kit is different to people using them, i know dealers are liable for the equipment they sell, therefor selling non-ce saws could land them in big touble, especially if the user had an accident with it,

i suspect its up to HSE if ok to use non-ce equipment for work (and i can imagine what the answer will be)

youve only got to look at the amount of ms192t saws turning up on ebay (and stihl dont sell them in europe!) i cant think its homeowners who are selling these,

If the gear concerned is being sold in the USA, it must have passed the relevant ANSI tests. If you get proof of that it should be enough to convince a loler inspector.

As for selling non-CE marked saws, you cant. Nothing to stop you using them though.

Douggie Bennett! - he tried telling me that PTS were buying steel poles from him to use on line clearance work! And he thinks that those kinky Weaver harnesses are the best in the world!
